Understanding Spam
18 Jul 2004

One of the biggest buzzwords on the Internet today is spam. Everyone is concerned with having too much spam in his or her own email box. But have you thought about avoiding the spam filters when you email others? Some email providers now search for spam words. They search every email before you receive it, and will automatically delete it if it meets certain criteria. Those criteria can be:

  • Using words like “free” “money” “to unsubscribe”
  • Using exclamation points in the subject line
  • Not using a real name in the from line
  • Typing in capital letters
  • Using the phrase “for only” with a cash amount
  • Using the phrase “if you do not wish to receive any more”
  • Telling you how to reduce or stop further spam

Spam filters do change frequently, and can be hard to keep track. Bottom line is don’t assume someone just isn’t answering your email. If you don’t get an answer, email them again. With all of the new processes taking place because of spam, we are in a learning curve. Keep trying until you find a way to get your message through.
