Meta Tags
By Lori Osterberg
What is a meta tag, and why is it important? To put it simply, a meta tag is used by search engines to allow them to more accurately list your site in their indexes. The complicated part comes in the search engines themselves. Each search engine operates differently. But for many of the most popular search engines, each sends a spider program into your site to read the information stored in your site. The more key words it finds, the higher it will be placed. Your job is to tune in to which words are the most meaningful to your site and to your business.
Two ways of increasing your chances within the search engines are to refine your search engine keywords and description. Begin by listing all of the keywords appropriate to your business. Concentrate on what your customers will type in a search engine to find you, not what you consider relevant words. Type in each keyword, followed by a comma. Your description should be short and concise, and use words that relate directly to your overall service. Make it one or two sentences, or at most a small paragraph.
At SnapMonkey.com, we realize how important meta tags can be in your overall marketing plan. (Even some of the customized designers simply don’t put in your meta tags – and their getting top dollar!) Meta tags are easily input right in the design mode of your website builder. When you’re in design mode, simply click on the Tools function, then under the Options column, click “edit meta tags”. Then you simply type in your keywords and description, save and your done!
