Using and Understanding Keywords
By Lori Osterberg
I have had a lot of conversations with people on keywords, meta tags and descriptions over the past couple of weeks. It seems there is a big misunderstanding over keywords and descriptions, and their importance in your overall ranking in search engines.
Not only is the topic in general confusing, it seems that every designer and web “expert” has a different opinion. How is the average business owner supposed to understand? Keywords are the words you list within your website (not visible to readers, but in the coding of your site that is picked up by spiders for ranking within the search engines.) As much hype that has been given to keywords, they are not the only determinate to ranking your site.
With the ever-growing Google.com, ranking has been changing rapidly. No longer do keywords and key descriptions play as an important role as they have in the past. Instead, content on your site is taking on more and more priority. Because Google.com uses content in making its determination on ranking, keyword placement is only one of many ways used in determining your ranking.
