What does an email mean to your business? More than most people think.

When you go into business, you set up your phone number. If you’re like most businesses, you keep that phone number for the life of your business. With one of my businesses, we have moved locations three times. Yet we still continue to forward our original phone number into our current account, simply because referrals are the lifeline of our business, and we know the value that phone number has to our business. We can’t take the chance that someone might not be able to get through to us because they were referred with an old business card.

The same goes with your email address. Imagine putting your email address out on several websites that link to your website. When people find your information and try to contact you, the links simply cease to exist. These people don’t try another way to find you. They stop trying, and move on to your competitor. You are losing valuable referrals if you are unreachable. That link has been broken because you have moved your email account, or changed email addresses without changing your connections.

The best way to solve that problem is to create one email account, and keep that account stable. Creating an email using your business name is the most logical, such as Info@SnapMonkey.com . The great thing with using your business name is you can easily switch the name, and have it follow your website. Most hosting companies (including SnapMonkey.com) provide you with several email addresses directly linked to your website address. As long as you keep your website address stable, your email accounts will remain. .

Let me give you one other example of something I see all the time. When you initially register for your domain name, you listed all of your contact information, including your email address. If you change your email address, make sure you change the information with the register listing your domain name. When it comes time for renewal, if that email doesn’t get through, your URL may be cancelled, and put out to the general public to be re-released. Losing your URL over something as simple as changing your email address consistently can be a hard experience for your business.

Your email address is an important business tool. Like your phone number, guard the way your clients contact you, and protect the one thing that will grow your business quicker than anything else – referrals!
